It’s amazing how each of these cenotes are so different and unique, despite how many of them there are. Cenote Sac-Actun really is something truly special to experience.
As you approach the entrance, you’ll go down a stair case where you will descend onto a mysterious pathway that winds down a little and might seem like it leads to no where. However, you’ll be getting into the water and entering through a cave off to the side.

A real contrast to Cenote Dos Ojos just down the path (which is larger, busier and overall more of a main attraction), Cenote Sac Actun is a quiet location. This is because Cenote Sac-Actun is only available for you to see as a guided tour. You will be getting into the water and swimming in a cave through secret pathways to explore the site.

You’ll be provided with snorkel gear and with a life jacket—which in most cases will be mandatory to wear in order to take the tour.
Be aware that you will have to leave your personal belongings behind. As mentioned before, the tour will require you to swim. Be aware that at the time of writing this article, there were no lockers at this location for you to lock up your personal items. However, I actually brought a wearable water proof case that I purchased from Amazon—where I put my phone, ID and debit card. It came in very handy for this tour as you can see.
You wear the case around your waist like a fanny pack so you don’t have to worry about it while you’re swimming. Just be sure everything is properly sealed up beforehand, especially if you plan on putting your phone in there. I loved having this with me as it gave me peace of mind knowing that all of my important items were on me. Other than that, I just had my snorkel mask and my go pro at hand.

Your tour guide will carefully guide you throughout the location, where you’ll arrive at different pockets of the cave as you’re swimming through—Including a little interesting landmark where an opening in the ceiling sits above what you could call a miniature island.

If you’re looking to get away from the crowds and experience something out of the ordinary, Cenote Sac-Actun is a quiet, mysterious and stunningly beautiful location. You’ll have to see it for yourself.

A beautiful and surreal experience at Cenote Sac-Actun
The tour that I took was about 45 minutes total. However, they may offer more than one tour. Cenote Dos Ojos and Cenote Nicte-Ha is just down the path from this location, which you can hop over to after you visit this one.
Thanks for reading my article about cenote Sac-Actun! The photos I took were mainly screenshots from my GoPro and it was pretty dark as you can see, so the quality isn’t the best—but I hope you still got a decent picture of what the place is like. Of course it is much more stunning in person and there is much more to see. If you have any questions or anything to add, feel free to leave a comment below! I’d love to hear about it.
